Hi Guys!
It was great to see everyone who was able to make it out last Saturday. Looks like we’re heading off to a good start for getting those pencils and paintbrushes and creative brain juices going this year!
Our first assignment is to illustrate a Fillmore sized poster for one of the artists named in this week’s NPR All Song’s Considered podcast:

Come with sketches to the CCA back tables Saturday Feb 20 at 2:30 PM.
Looking forward to seeing your ideas!

Everything but… Recent Illustrations
January 3, 2010
Hey Everyone,
Just thought I’d share a few of finished illustrations I did for Caitlin’s class in the fall. Looking forward to people’s feedback, and especially to getting to see everybody again in 2010. Happy New Year! Let’s make it a creative and productive one!

Recent Work – Wine Label
January 3, 2010
Hey guys,
here’s some recent work from Caitlin’s class. I know some of you were in the class with me, so you’ve seen it already. For those that haven’t, enjoy, and definitely post what you’ve been working on!
Wine label for Periscope Cellars:
Here are some of the other ideas that didn’t make it to the final. I decided to go for more sophisticated feel (since it’s for a wine label after all), but in retrospect I wish I stuck with some of these original sketches. The innuendo still cracks me up.
Finally I finished

The Wiz 2.0
July 29, 2009
Thanks for the comments Veronika. I definitely was not satisfied with my first sketch. So I took another stab at it. I actually worked on this before your comments.
I thought about making Dorothy a mask, but I did wanted to keep her more realistic in comparison to the lion, scarecrow and tinman. I like where this is going a lot better.

The Wiz
July 23, 2009
For the play poster assignment I decided to do The Wiz. I’m not trying to base it off of the movie, but rather the play/musical that was produced first in 1975; sans the King of Pop.

Basically I wanted to represent the Tinman, Cowardly Lion and Scarecrow as African masks (like a fantasy) and Dorothy (plus Toto) as a real person. Creating a swirl around her that flows into Emerald city. My execution will probably be a mixture of colored pencils and pen & ink.
Let me know what you guys think.
peace,
Mike
YouTube Song: By The River Dark

So I had a problem uploading the YouTube song By The River Dark by Leonard Cohen for my poster. Hopefully this time it worked. Ginger

Happiness is a Warm Gun final
July 4, 2009

Here are my finals for the song. I used photoshop to do the coloring, which worked out pretty well for me and allowed me to have several color versions.
I had a lot of difficulty dealing with color managment in photoshop as it relates to printing. My monitor is not calibrated so that might be an issue as well. If anyone has any advice with how to deal with this problem, let me know. I could really use some hints.
